Tooth loss affects more than just your smile—it can also lead to a gradual breakdown of the underlying jawbone. In a healthy mouth, the pressure from chewing and biting stimulates the jaw and maintains its density. When a tooth is lost, that stimulation stops, and the surrounding bone begins to shrink or resorb over time.
If you’ve experienced jawbone loss, Dr. Corey Christensen at Afton Family Dental may recommend a bone graft to restore the strength and structure of your jaw.
What Is a Bone Graft?
A bone graft is a surgical procedure that rebuilds and reinforces areas of the jaw where bone mass has been lost. This treatment may be necessary if your jaw lacks the density needed to support a dental implant or other restoration, or if bone deterioration has occurred due to advanced gum disease (periodontitis).
During the procedure, a small amount of bone material is added to the weakened area of your jaw. This material can come from:
- Your own body (autograft), which tends to integrate most successfully
- A donor source (allograft)
- Synthetic or lab-processed bone material
As the graft heals, your natural bone fuses with the grafted material, gradually creating a stronger and more stable foundation.
When Is Bone Grafting Recommended?
You may need a bone graft if:
- You’ve been missing one or more teeth for a period of time and your jawbone has begun to deteriorate
- You are preparing for a dental implant, but lack sufficient bone support
- Periodontal disease has caused bone loss around existing teeth
- You’ve experienced trauma or infection that damaged part of your jaw
Bone grafting is often the first step in rebuilding the foundation for a healthy, functional, and long-lasting restoration.
