Sinus Lift

When it comes to dental implants, upper molars are just as important as the teeth visible in your smile. However, replacing these teeth often requires additional steps to ensure a secure and lasting result. If you’re considering implants in the upper jaw, Dr. Corey Christensen may recommend a sinus lift to prepare the area for treatment.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, is a specialized oral surgery that adds bone to the upper jaw in the region of the premolars and molars. This is often necessary when there isn’t enough existing bone height in the upper jaw to support a dental implant due to bone loss or the position of the maxillary sinuses.

The maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces located just above the back portion of the upper jaw. After tooth loss—especially if teeth have been missing for an extended period—bone in this area may resorb or shrink, leaving too little support for implants. Bone loss caused by periodontal disease can further reduce the available bone structure.

How the Procedure Works

During the sinus lift procedure, Dr. Christensen carefully lifts the sinus membrane upward and places bone grafting material into the space beneath it. This added material helps increase the height and density of the jawbone in the area where implants are planned.

Once the graft is placed, a healing period of four to nine months is typically needed. During this time, the graft material integrates with your natural bone, creating a solid foundation for implant placement.

Why a Sinus Lift Might Be Right for You

You may benefit from a sinus lift if:

  • You’re missing upper molars or premolars and have insufficient bone for implants
  • Tooth loss has resulted in significant bone resorption in the upper jaw
  • Periodontal disease has compromised the bone in the sinus region
  • You’re planning for dental implants and want the best possible long-term outcome

Schedule a Consultation

Dr. Corey Christensen will evaluate your bone structure using advanced imaging to determine whether a sinus lift is the right solution for your needs. Our goal is to ensure your dental implant has the support it needs to function reliably and last for years to come.
